Active Discovery on the Danube

9 Days from Linz to Budapest

Day 1 Arrive in Linz, Austria, a European capital of culture and Austria’s third-largest city. Embark on the AVALON LUMINARY. After a mandatory safety exercise, meet Avalon Waterways’ friendly crew and fellow shipmates at a welcome reception.

Day 2 Arrive in the pretty market town of Engelhartszell near the German border. Step ashore and visit the stunning rococo Engelszell Abbey. Tour its brewery, explore the Sensory Garden, and taste locally produced cheeses and beer brewed by the Trappist monks. Alternatively, join a fun guided hike along the route that smugglers took during World War II, when a tightly controlled border existed between Austria and Germany.

Back on board, lunch is served. Bavarian specialties will leave you energised and ready to join an exhilarating hike along the Danube. Watch the ship pass through the Schlögen Oxbow, a particularly beautiful horseshoe-shaped curve of the river. When night falls, opt for a theatre or music excursion. You can even mingle with locals at a fun pub crawl!

Day 3 In the morning, visit Mauthausen. With evidence of human habitation dating back to the Neolithic Age, choose between a guided bike tour to an ancient Roman border defense fort, or tour the heart-wrenching Mauthausen Concentration Camp, one of World War II’s largest and most brutal Nazi work camps.

Day 4 Before arriving in Vienna, paddle a canoe on a guided tour down the Danube. You can also take in incredible views on an easy guided bike tour from Spitz to Krems and enjoy the sights in Dürnstein. Wind down the evening with a guided hike through the vineyards outside Vienna, with wine tasting and dinner at a Heurigen wine tavern.

Day 5 Waltz down Vienna and choose an activity for the day. Enjoy a bike tour that takes in the sights along the famed Ginstrasse, or jog between sites if you are extremely fit. Take a unique Insiders Tour and discover something different. It could be anything from visiting a musical instrument maker, to preparing some foods at a cooking class.

Day 6 A second full day in Vienna presents further opportunities for cultural immersion. At the crack of dawn, wrap yourself in the peace of the city during an early riser walking tour. Visit the Italian and Dutch Masters Gallery after breakfast, or explore the Military Museum, which commemorates the heroic past of the Habsburg Empire.

Day 7 Arrive in Visegrád and spend the day in the great outdoors. Danube-Ipoly National Park, a home to eagles, falcons, bats, terrapins, fire salamanders and other wildlife, is a great hiking destination. Later in the afternoon, arrive in Budapest, Hungary.

Day 8 Disembark from the ship and see the best of Budapest on a city sightseeing tour. This features the Heroes’ Square, Fishermen’s Bastion, Matthias Church, and an inside visit of the Opera House. Thereafter, shop for handcrafted souvenirs and savour a cream cake in Gerbeaud Café, join an optional tour of Budapest’s limestone cave system, or play nine holes of golf.

Day 9 End the trip with breakfast in Budapest.
