The brand’s ability to combine pure elements, creating personalised skincare solutions that help users achieve healthy, beautiful and radiant skin, also comes with a conscious effort to be sustainable.
“We believe that being conscious of what you put on your skin, and how those ingredients are derived, leads to smarter and more sustainable decisions.”
If Alcheme were a female icon, she would be Maggie Q. A citizen of the world, the American actress, model and animal rights activist is passionate about defending her beliefs and fearlessly putting herself out there.
“Maggie has an international background. Being half Asian, half European, and brought up in the US, she reflects our own experiences as well,” say co-founders, Tuyen Lamy and Constance Mandefield, over an email interview.
Derived from the science of Alchemy, a seemingly magical process of transforming matter into gold, the name Alcheme reflects the brand’s ability to combine pure elements, creating personalised skincare solutions that help users achieve healthy, beautiful and radiant skin.
Inspired by their conversations with women, the co-founders started this brand of bespoke, intentional skincare by harnessing the power of a technological platform that not only educates women on their skin needs, but also offers high-performance solutions that help them meet various wellness goals.
“Our objective is to simplify the skincare routine, without compromising on results. By personalising each solution, we aim to bring together all the active ingredients your skin needs in a single formula,” they add.
Doyenne: Tell us more about intentional skincare. What is your brand ethos?
Alcheme: We believe that being conscious of what you put on your skin, and how those ingredients are derived, leads to smarter and more sustainable decisions. That is why every aspect of the Alcheme journey has been thoughtfully planned to bring the very best of what you actually need.
Without drawing on unnecessary resources, we only include the extracts that address your specific skin needs. We also produce in quantities you require, reducing our footprint, as well as creating fresh and on-demand solutions.
D: What is your approach towards skincare?
A: We have two guiding principles. Skincare starts with knowing and understanding your skin needs. That is why we offer a snapshot of the analysis results after each online skin consultation, as well as an open line to skincare experts who advise on the proper skincare routines, application tips and further clarify your skin concerns. We also believe that a skincare routine should be adapted to suit your lifestyle and schedule, so that you can consistently go through it, day in day out, without hassle or inconvenience.
D: Let’s put things into perspective. We hear that an eye serum is coming soon. How do you treat the windows to the soul?
A: The eye area is the thinnest skin on the face. It also has a low distribution of sebum glands. These properties make it more fragile and drier than other areas of the skin. For this reason, eye care products should offer long lasting hydration in a light texture, in order to avoid saturating the eye area with oily ingredients, which could lead to the appearance of milia – small white oil points when the products are too oily. An eye serum will also require ingredients that have a low irritation profile, targeting specific concerns like dark circles, puffiness and sagginess.
D: Alcheme also makes a conscious effort to be sustainable. What practices do you currently have that benefit users?
A: Our packaging is recyclable and airless, so users can keep our products fresh for a longer time, with less preservatives. As we make to order, Alcheme cuts down on wastage by only using active ingredients required by customers. We also source from trusted suppliers who have formal and documented processes in place for harvesting and extracting natural extracts. Overall, by customizing formulations, we simplify the skincare routine, cutting down on wastage and packaging, so users won’t need many products, hence incur fewer costs.
D: What is your daily skincare routine?
A: Our daily morning routine includes a cleanser, toner, eye serum, face serum, emulsion and sunblock. We also recommend a weekly exfoliation and mask.
D: An emulsion?
A: The Alcheme emulsion is a light moisturiser, developed specifically to offer long lasting hydration, with a texture that’s adapted to Singapore’s humid weather. In addition to tailor made active ingredients, the emulsion offers a layer which seals in hydration and protects the skin from external aggressions. It is great for an air conditioned environment, or if you have dry or sensitive skin. We recommend using it to avoid skin dehydration.
D: Here’s a fun question. What does Alcheme enjoy in her daily life?
A: Taking a swim at the end of the day! It’s a great way to stay fit, to relax and unwind before turning in. Alcheme also enjoys a hearty and healthy breakfast with her family. If she could go on a holiday, she loves discovering new places and mingling with the locals.
Alcheme offers bespoke skincare by harnessing cutting-edge facial recognition technology, developing formulations uniquely suited to each customer and their individual needs.
