“Nothing here is too posh or pretentious. The menu has constantly changing specials, all the while offering wholesome farm-to-table dishes that are wallet-friendly and accessible to many.”

Special moments start with simple pleasures. Across the landmark Queen Victoria Building lies The Grounds of the City, a bustling food destination that promises to show you a marvellous time.

Swing open heavy brass doors and transport yourself into a fairytale world. A modern weekend lunch crowd is buzzing. Reminiscent of the roaring twenties, waiters dressed in suspenders jostle about, serving up house-roasted espresso and filter coffees.

The Grounds of the City is a retreat from the everyday humdrum. Whether it’s a talk over tea, catch-up over coffee, or an encounter with a slice of cake or two, this inner-city hub adds just the right flavour to your day.

Allow the hosts to find you a table, and settle in with a menu that has something for everyone. In the meantime, listen to big band jazz music blare from modern speakers while watching tea ladies expertly navigate the room with a trolley piled with ethically-sourced teas and freshly-baked cakes.

Pull up a stool at the Barista’s Bar and take advantage of the barista’s smarts and skills. They’ll help you find your perfect match and learn more about the blend you love. Savour that steaming brew, soak up the atmosphere, and stay for a while longer.

The concept of The Grounds is best characterised by The Grounds of Alexandria, a landmark cafe roastery, cafe, and sustainable garden. They’re big on flavours and exude inner beauty all around.

The industrial chic warehouse space is transformed but still charming and cosy from the inside out. With vintage touches and feelings of homeliness, scenes from a classic country house are replicated using lush green courtyards and lofty white interiors.

Nothing here is too posh or pretentious. The menu has constantly changing specials, all the while offering wholesome farm-to-table dishes that are wallet-friendly and accessible to many. Handmade and artisanal loaves from the bakery ensure that every patron is well-fed.

The Grounds Markets is open on weekends. Every corner of the market stimulates the senses and offers something more for the imagination. Stallholders have one thing in common: a passion for creating unique and innovative products for guests of The Grounds.

With 80 different stalls that alternate weekly, you’ll discover new local makers, bakers and creators. A few standouts like Merry Pops Australia’s popsicles, Hunters Smokehouse’s signature Beef Jerky, and Sydney Cake Art feed the curious mind.

Another standout is The Grounds Farm. Say hello to the animal friends: Russell Crow the rooster, goats named after Sesame Street’s Bert and Ernie, as well as local hog Kevin Bacon. These cute furry pals add life to an already dynamic little inner-city suburb, a place where Sydney truly blossoms.
